There are bad roads, and then there are death-defying pathways of terror that make you wonder “Why is there a road there at all?” And more importantly, why is anyone driving on it? Bolivia’s “Death Highway” is one such road. Recently featured on Top Gear’s trip to Bolivia and on CarBuzz, the highway, also known as North Yungas Road, is by far the most dangerous on the planet. It covers a deadly 70km stretch between La Paz and Coroico over a descent of 3,600 metres and is studded with ridiculously tight hairpins, narrow passages and terrifying 800 metre drops. In 1995, the Inter American Development Bank christened this route “The Most Dangerous Road in the World” after a series of disastrous accidents and the macabre ratio of death per mile. On an average, 26 vehicles plummet over the edge each year, claiming more than 100 lives. youtube/watch?v=OceP1j2Lo0g#t=26
