There are many efforts leading the way to address the humanitarian crisis all along the southwest border of the US. If you are able, please consider making a financial contribution or volunteer with one of the following organizations: Houston area: FIEL Houston is collecting gently used clothing items and toiletries including toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, socks, and backpacks. For more information on how to contribute, please call (713) 364-3435. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is accepting donations to assemble Welcome Kits. The kits include: a backpack, bottled water, bus tokens, reading materials, first aid kits, person hygiene items, nonperishable food items, small blankets, and wipes. For more information or to volunteer to assemble the kits, please contact Sister Pauline Troncale at (713) 874-6676 or [email protected]. Dallas area: The Dallas County Young Democrats (DCYD) are coordinating efforts to collect the following supplies before their next meeting on August 12th: blankets, pillows, hygiene packs for boys and girls, socks, underwear, shoes, and backpacks. In an effort to combat the negative attention the children have received, DCYD is also making homemade cards, signs, and banners reminding the children they are loved. My office is happy to accept the supplies on their behalf and send the donations to Dallas in time for their next meeting. Please call (713) 691-6912. Rio Grande Valley area: Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Brownsville created family assistance centers in McAllen and Brownsville. They are in need of volunteers and supplies to help serve 200 people per day. For more information, please call (956) 541-0220. Additional opportunities to follow. If you know of more opportunities, please share. My office is available to disseminate the information.
