There are nine different species of Leopard still alive today. The Arabian Leopard is one example of the nine all of which are threatened or endangered one-way or the other. Arabian Leopards are listed as [critically endangered] with populations no higher than a few hundred if that. Panthera pardus ssp. nimr as its scientifically named is threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation; hunting of its wild prey, and retaliatory killing in defense of livestock . At least ten wild leopards were live-captured in Yemen since the early 1990s and sold to zoos; some have been placed in conservation breeding centers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Population trends have become worse over the years since its last re-listing from 1994. Since this time populations have declined so rapidly from 1994 the Arabian Leopards was re-classified from endangered to now critically endangered. The Taiz Zoo has established a breeding project from the five animals they caught within the wild. To date its estimated some twenty four or more Arabian Leopards now remain at the zoo. While many people may despise zoos those whom do fail to see the actual IMPORTANCE of such captive breeding facilities. So, as explained many, many times over, while these animals remain at [critically endangered level] within the wild then the responsibility for man and woman to become its career is required to preserve this species for later reintroduction into the wild. Animal Rights Activists that disagree with this form of protective captivity even though its actually doing good would rather then see the species and many others extinct? The Yemon Leopard Foundation is seeking volunteers interested in working or contributing to the preservation of the Arabian Leopard. If you can in someway help please contact the foundation hereto; [email protected]
