There are quite a few technology and industry terms used in the 3D animation, gaming and visual effects industries that can be confusing. Below is a short list that may help you better navigate your way while trying to sort out which school you will attend. 3D = This can refer to 3D computer generated images OR to stereoscopic pictures (wear funny glasses in the movie theatre to see it) STEREOSCOPIC = The term for 3-dimensional images that is preferred by the industry so as not to confuse it with 3D 3D ANIMATION = Animating 3-dimensional Computer Generated objects in virtual space, such as computer generated characters, monsters, spaceships, cars, cameras etc… 3D MODELER = The artist responsible for building and/or sculpting a computer generated object CG = Computer Generated or Computer Graphics CGI = Computer Generated Imagery COMPOSITOR = The artist responsible for seamlessly blending the CG object with the photographic background. COMPUTER GENERATED OBJECTS = This does not mean that the computer creates the objects. Hard working, skilled artists and technicians create the objects. The computer draws the object over and over and over again thereby generating an image sequence to be used in a film, television show or game. FX = usually refers to particle and fluid effects such as smoke, flame, sparks, water, cloth, hair and other dynamic physical effects. LIGHTING/SHADING ARTIST = The artist responsible for making the computer generated object look real in the final picture MATCHMOVER = The technician responsible for matching the CG camera motion with the real camera motion in the plate PLATE = The photography onto which the CG elements are added. VISUAL EFFECTS = photorealistic objects or effects that have been seamlessly added to film photography so well that you can not tell by looking at the image what is real and what is computer-generated.
