There are so many great reasons to write in Martha Jordan to represent Excel on the Monroe County School Board. Just see her ad in this week’s Monroe Journal. It lists her many accomplishments. She attends every training opportunity to improve her knowledge of education’s challenges and how school boards can help their schools. I wasn’t going to be negative in my campaigning for Martha Jordan but the destruction of my sign on my property has changed my mind. My primary motivation for not wanting Roger Casey to represent Excel is simple: HE LIED TO ME DURING HIS CAMPAIGN! He was campaigning door-to-door around spring break last year and stopped in my driveway while I was potting some plants with my mother-in-law, Bettye Anderson. Given my involvement with our schools and the board, I was very interested to hear his point of view and ideas for change. We spoke for at least 15 minutes, probably closer to 20. He told me he thought the school board members were in collusion with Superintendent Murphy and there were no independent opinions on the board. I believe most people are honest and act with good intentions so I asked him why the board members would give in to Dr. Murphy’s demands and not do their jobs and vote their own minds. He very explicitly told me that Board President Patsy Black and Superintendent Kathy Murphy are cousins and Patsy Black does whatever Dr. Murphy wants. I thought that was odd and unlikely so I asked Patsy Black if she and Dr. Murphy were cousins. She denied it and laughed at the how ludicrous that statement was. Roger Casey won the primary by six or seven votes. If he LIED TO ME, how many other people did he lie to and how many of them voted for him because of his lies? If just a handful of people voted for him because they believed Patsy Black and Kathy Murphy were in collusion because they were related, then he won dishonestly and does not deserve to represent such an upstanding community as the Excel Public School district.
