There are times when non-Christians look at the life and stories - TopicsExpress

There are times when non-Christians look at the life and stories of Jesus and tell me that His mission was love. To teach others to love each other and consequently to love even when we disagree with what they are doing. Though I agree with this assertion, I believe it misses the whole point. I agree that Jesus supports this understanding of love and He would stand behind these claims but this does not summarize His intent in coming to this world. If it was, Jesus would be no greater than Ghandi in my mind. What we often miss is the fact that this ideology, though well meant, only summarizes the second greatest commandment (Matthew 22:39). What Jesus desired first and foremost was a love for God. In Matthew 22:37-38 Jesus portrays the life of love as someone who gives their heart, soul, and mind completely in order to express a love for God. Notice that the second commandment is like it. To love others and to be peaceable with them is a wonderful thing to do but it is only the natural flow from the commandment that it is like. If I claim that I follow the teachings of Jesus when He speaks about love, this should be the natural conclusion: to love God first and give Him the obedience of my heart, soul, and mind. Without this conclusion, one cannot truly follow the teachings of love that Jesus portrays in the Bible.
