There are two criteria by which any act of worship be accepted: 1. Al-Ikhlāš (sincerity). A Muslim intends to perform his acts of worship solely to please Allāh. Negating this principle would lead him to shirk (associating partners with Allāh)—its minor versions are riyā’ and sum‘at (showing off). 2. Al-Ittibā‘ (conformity). A Muslim enacts such practices in accordance to the guidelines and examples drawn by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Contradicting these prophetic instructions would nullify the essence of his worship and will lead him to religious bid‘at (acts of innovation) which are leeways to misguidance. Both principles are intertwined that they cannot exist, in so far as the premises of Islām is concerned, without the other.
