There are two kinds of pages on Facebook. The first kind are ‘branded’ pages that are associated with a product or service and are generally used as an advertisement platform for the linked product or service. The second type of pages are nothing but an extension of personal profiles (like our Group). They are on Facebook to propagate an idea, create a discussion platform or make people laugh. Since the pages have multiple admins, the posts on the page generally are the sum-total of the viewpoints of all the admins. Facebook is a free service and it charges only for advertisement which can give a boost to post virality. Post’s organic reach however is directly proportional to the content quality, hence unadvertised pages like us which thrive only on the post quality can survive easily. The growth however takes a hit. But that’s alright considering the fact that discussion/idea/humor pages do not have a set business agenda and set numbers in mind. A page admin ( like me) that posts about news/politics/current affairs sources his information from news websites which are accessible to all. He doesn’t have reporters, camera and doesn’t work out of a studio. His only investment in creating content and building discussions is time which again is alright considering the fact that he/she is passionate about it. We have come to know that some pages have started asking for monthly contributions from their followers to ‘keep them going’ and they are doing it very innovatively to confuse the unsuspecting followers. In my humble opinion this is unethical. A page admin cannot hide behind the veil of rationality and ask his followers to contribute to keep the admins motivated. I am friends with admins and founders of many famous FB pages and I know most of them are full time working professionals and are making enough to stay motivated. If you wish to donate, donate to people who need the money. Donate to blind schools, donate to orphanages, donate to paraplegic societies, donate to awesome free services like Mozilla and Wikipedia. Do not spend your hard-earned money to keep a bunch of page admins motivated (Our group never asked for any money from anyone nor we would ever ask). Your naivety will only intensify their gluttony.
