There had been some whispers about the St. Louis Rams, one of the more well-positioned NFL teams, and their future at quarterback. Incumbent starter Sam Bradford is due $17.6 million this season, is coming off a torn ACL and has had uneven results in his career thus far. Would they extend his contract? Could they even consider cutting Bradford for the massive cap savings and drafting one? Jeff Fisher tried his best to put a kibosh on the speculation. Appearing on ESPN Radios Mike and Mike in the Morning show, the Rams head coach said Bradford would be the Rams starter in 2014. We talk about extensions with all our players under contract, Fisher said. Whether or not we do so with him, I dont know where all this came from, but Sams our quarterback. Hes going to be under center. Bradford quietly was playing well when he was hurt in a loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 7, and Fisher said his rehab is going well. Both Fisher and Rams GM Les Snead are scheduled to speak to the media at large Friday afternoon at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. The team is likely to offer Bradford an extension at some point, if for no other reason than to ease the salary-cap hit for this season. The Rams own the Nos. 2 and 13 picks in Round 1 of the draft, the first coming from the Robert Griffin III trade with the Washington Redskins. Its clear now that the Rams will not draft a quarterback in either spot. Injuries have derailed Bradfords career to date, with a slew of shoulder problems coming out of college, too. He has an 18-30-1 record as the Rams starter and has yet to lead the team to the postseason, coming up one game short as a rookie. Has he lived up to No. 1 overall pick status? Heck no. But Bradford, 26, is actually younger than Alex Smith was when he broke out with his finest season to date at age 27 in 2011. The Rams also are starting to build something special on offense and could augment that side of the ball with the pair of high draft picks. They likely will need to add a quarterback to the roster, too, though, as Kellen Clemens — who took over ably for Bradford — is an impending free agent, and there is no developmental quarterback on the roster outside of third-year journeyman Austin Davis. - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports.
