There has been a lot of drama over this debate between Ben Affleck - TopicsExpress

There has been a lot of drama over this debate between Ben Affleck and Bill Maher. I dont want to take sides here or spend time fact-checking their claims (although a quick search shows that both Affleck and Maher get their numbers wrongs). What I do want to point out is how few people understand what the word debate means. Ben Affleck, at no point in this ten minute video, participates in anything that resembles a rational debate. For those of us sensitive to it, he is painful to watch. At any point of disagreement Affleck gets flustered, immediately defaults to calling them racists, and attempts multiple distractions. The Red Herring Fallacy can be seen multiple times here. Maher and Harris cite facts for their position - Affleck responds with gems such as, Goddamn these gays are trying to eat each other! Come again, Ben? Im not even sure what you mean there. But it has nothing to do with the debate. Affleck seems to be suffering from the the all my friends in Hollywood agree with me syndrome. He doesnt know how to respond when his opinion is questioned, because no one ever questions him. I saw Kevin Smith perform live stand-up once when he was talking about Affleck. (The two are friends and Smith directed several movies with Affleck). Smith was basically drooling over Affleck, saying how well spoken he is, predicting Affleck would be president one day. This is what happens when your friends always tell you youre right. You sound intelligent to them but malfunction in a real debate. https://youtube/watch?v=vln9D81eO60
