There have been a lot of comments about Occupy Sydney on this page and I want to clarify some details. I support the right of people to protest and I support concerns about wealth disparity and growing poverty. The issue is not about a protest – it is about structures in Martin Place. The structures were inhibiting the City’s ability to clean the area and preventing the public from being able to use public space. People have the right to protest and promote their causes safely. The 65,000 people who walk through Martin Place every day also have the right to move freely around in a pleasant and efficient way. Good government needs to get that balance right. Since the Council’s decision, City staff and Police have returned four times to remove items that were causing a public nuisance from the site – those items have been stored at the Bay Street and Epsom Road depots. To arrange pick up items, call 9265 9333 and ask for the manager of cleansing and waste. If you have any allegations of assault, they should be made directly to the Police: police.nsw.gov.au/services/additional_services/complain_about_a_police_officer clcnsw.org.au/cb_pages/making_a_police_complaint_-_useful_information.php If you want to find out more about the City’s support for people who are homeless or sleeping rough follow this link.
