There have been a lot of posts about how much money X or Y - TopicsExpress

There have been a lot of posts about how much money X or Y companies pay. Plus the rotation is always a big consideration when it comes to working in this Industry. Here a my thoughts on choosing to work in this Industry as a Career. Yes Money is VERY important when choosing where you want to work. BUT and this is a very big but, this type of work is a lifestyle and you have to really want to have this type of lifestyle. There has been posts about the number of hours that are required. I for one do not agree with companies NOT paying OT. For the last part of my Career of almost 30 years of sailing, (as CE), I was not paid OT. This is not saying that I did not HAVE to put in the hours to make sure that the vessel was ready to sail and I used to get crap for filling out my time sheet (STCW) with the actual hours worked. They hated seeing anything in RED as that signals being over the allowed amount but they way I saw it was if I HAD to worked them they got marked down. Anyway, the MAIN reasons that I decided to make working in this Industry my Career were #1 The Money was pretty damn good but #2 was the MOST important and that was the time off! Working in this Industry is very tough on a home life when it comes to having a significant other at home. One of the Captains that I worked with years ago put it the best. The type of person that you need to run your life for you while you are at sea is the type of person that you hate to be around when home because they do not need you. They are so used to making all of the decisions day to day and really dont need our input on making them. So, for all of the guys and gals that are thinking of making the jump to a career of going to sea, you really need to look at the big picture and take everything into consideration.
