. . There is a meme going around saying that Mitch McConnell has voted against the minimum wage 16 times while voting a pay increase for himself a half dozen times. Of course, to fully understand this contrast one must know more about these votes other than merely the number of “no” votes wielded by that particular Senator. If one thinks about it, it becomes clear how easily another can be led to an uninformed judgment based on a fatuous meme. It does not present the entire premise but simply gives one the impression that because a person voted “nay” automatically makes him, as one critic said, “a disgusting man.” . According to the official government site for Congressional actions, Thomas.gov, there are references to a number of Senate votes specifically regarding the issue of a federal minimum wage. Anyone caring to take the time to learn the credibility of the meme to which I’m referring can go to that site and check on the voting records of those bills. The list I compiled goes back to the 101st Congress (1989) when McConnell had been warming his Senate seat for only two years. . This site not only shows how McConnell actually voted but how every Senator voted on this 28 questions of the minimum wage. Diminishing the meme a tad, it’s revealed that the future Majority Leader voted “nay” 11 times. Interestingly though is that in those same votings, we find the soon-to-be “late” Majority Leader voted nay exactly 17 times!
