There is so much discussion here about how inadequate the service is from Wightlink AND Red Funnel. There has been much discussion about the quality and frequency of the service, the inconsistency and degree of cost, the professionalism of the staff and that it boils down to the lack of competition or regulation of the operators meaning they can operate with relative impunity. New entry to this market is the enormous cost, but even if Stelios or Mr Branson did step in with an alternative (easyFerry, anyone?), its only one more option with the marginal effect on pricing that would have. To have a service as frequent and as flexible as you need, at a reasonable cost, with no surly staff, the alternative cant be another ferry company. So why not a fixed link? The feasibility studies have been done and it is economically viable. It wouldnt be a private organisation creaming the profits, but operated by the government for a reasonable charge. Its working for the Isle of Skye, so why not the Isle of Wight? Not trolling here. Genuinely interested what the objections are.
