There is something about the Freedom Cafe that I love. Its relaxed, hidden away from the hustle and bustle and convenient. The converted containers give it an African feel which contrasts with the outside area, which is very European style, under the trees with a loose pebble floor. There is plenty of secure parking that makes it a winner from a location point of view. This is an ideal setting for Durbans weather and this morning was beautiful outside with a warm wintery sun. This was our choice for a breakfast meeting for Cheryl Johnson and I to plot the weeks activities for our, Save Our Berea campaign. The waiting staff have a laid-back style yet are highly efficient, the menu is interesting with a wide variety, and the food is excellent. And on a Sunday morning the place was virtually full and bustling. There are a number of quirky things like serving certain drinks in a jam jar for one, but rather go there to see them all. I quite naturally ordered the Eggs Benedict. Two poached eggs with bacon served on two slices of batard, baby spinach and covered in a subtle Hollandaise sauce. It was an interesting variation to serve it on a bread rather than the usual English Muffin. They have three versions and the bacon can be replaced by salmon gravlax (which they cure themselves) or Portebellini mushrooms. The menu gives a very interesting explanation of the word gravlax and how they cure the salmon. I enjoyed the dish immensely. Cheryl, went for the Zucchini friters, which have hint of nutmeg, served on a bed of rocket and mushrooms, with a poached egg on top. The dish is normally covered with a parmesan cream but Cheryl asked for it rather on the side, which I must say looks better and you can then control how much sauce you eat. The report was very good and the comment that the mushrooms were excellent. Mushrooms are not as easy to do correctly, as people often think. The menu in itself, is an interesting read. There is the normal coffee fare, a wide variety of teas, cocktails, milk shakes, spiked shakes, craft beers, Dragon Fiery ginger beer, fresh old school lemonade, spirits and a very interesting wine list. They also have a we love wine private collection for those that might want something more. They close at 4 but stay open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays until 9. This venue is one of those little gems in and around Durban that we often forget about. Its full of character, interesting people, and excellent food. Really worth a try.
