There is such a thing as superfluous knowledge. This is knowledge that brings no benefit to one who knows it in this world or the next. It has nothing to do with the stature of the scholar or student who imparts it, nor of the institution that promotes it. It has to do with the topic itself. When a topic leads to incessant arguments, bad blood, and dissention without bringing any practical or spiritual benefit whatsoever, then that knowledge is not useful.
