There is the idea that men these days have a man-cave to listen to music and therefore must mean listening to LPs is somehow related to cavemen. This is true and I shall now enlighten you as to how. These days men can only find peace in their man caves whereas fifteen millennia ago they achieved such blessed peace hunting. In so doing men developed hearing that allowed them to detect subtlety of sound and a keenness of hearing important detail. While hunting these over size and brutish creatures (much like men in the modern man-cave today, so my wife says about me anyway) developed acute “deep listening” skills to hunt, track, find and then kill the woolly mammoth Mrs. Caveman would carve into delicious steaks for the back-cave patio BBQ. To hunt successfully and to avoid the sabre-tooth tigers that were hunting, tracking, finding, and trying to kill them required developing an acute awareness in differentiating sound and an ability to filter out noise that would risk their very survival. It became pleasing for men to listen closely and thus eventually hardwired into men through the selective process of evolution. Today we exercise this pleasing need in our man-caves because of this evolutionary primal factor. To the caveman the ability to listen to what was important and discard the rest became prime much like modern man in his modern version of the primitive cave listening to music. Ask any modern woman and she is likely to tell you her husband doesnt listen to her. Women’s superfluous use of language seems unnecessary noise to be filtered out. Such talk was also dangerous on a hunt and is why men in a group today are not as verbose as women. This language noise would attract those ancient tigers I mentioned earlier and therefore eliminated by evolution. This important listing skill set is also the reason though women can hear better than men they lack the ability to distinguish important sound from the unimportant (except when it comes to the various sounds babies make but that is a different essay). After all, how many modern men complain their wives would rather listen to a crappy table top radio or compressed mp3 file? And why men further complain women often can’t hear how their stereo equipment sounds so much better and that a new cartridge and an expensive record cleaning system is a must have even at the expense of the collage education fund for little Billy or Betty? Brethren, this lengthy tongue and cheek essay about the hows and whys of listening to music played at the highest fidelity possible is so much more important to men than women. We can’t help it. It is part of our makeup set by natural selection for our survival. After all, after a bad day in the office do we still not retreat to the edifice named for the dwellings of our long ago ancestors to listen to music and wait for the tensions of the day to wash from our being? The man-cave is sanctuary to modern man as the cave was to cavemen. It truly is survival for us. I endth this essay because my wife tells me it is time to feed the sabre tooth tiger. I mean the house cat.
