There is this misconstrued belief that the Syrian Government and Hezbollah have always been allies; this is not true. Hafiz Al-Assad did support Hussein Al-Mousawis split from Amal to found Hezbollah in 1982; however, the latter operated under Iranian instructions. If you understood Hafiz Al-Assads personality; this was a no-no. In Fall of 1987, the Syrian Arab Army confronted Hezbollah at one of their checkpoints they setup in west Beirut - a firefight ensued and 27 Hezbollah soldiers were killed; it took some time before both parties agreed to rapprochement. This is just one example - my point is to illuminate the illogical belief that Hezbollah is the Syrian Governments protector or militia. Both parties differ in political ideologies, but they come together through common enemies and mutual allies.
