There seems to be two broad approaches to teaching writing to young children. Both seem to have their merits. One is the copywork/dictation method advocated by classical education advocates. It makes sense to limit how much we ask of students in the early stages and helping them to automate the mechanics of writing before asking them to come up with the content, syntax, word choice, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. But another school of thought (Charlotte Mason maybe?) advocates allowing children to play freely with language at the youngest ages, nurturing a love for words, story, and imagination and ignoring the mechanical issues until they are mature enough to comprehend such things. And of course there are approaches that fit along the spectrum. Which of these approaches has worked or not worked for you and your kids?
