There was no school in Kansas City on September 14, 1898, so children could see the soldiers of the Third and Fifth Regiments march through the streets. Kansas City was welcoming home her soldiers from the front. As they marched in solid phalanx through the streets they were reviewed, greeted and cheered. The ten mile line of march was thronged with people. A good share of the crowd in the streets were girls and it was noticeable that as soon as one company marched past them, they flocked back to the center of the street to meet the next company of soldiers. Girls carrying baskets placed flowers in the barrels of the mens rifles. The refreshments that were served to the boys at the Coates House consisted of big sandwiches, cut thick, with plenty of meat and a pint of coffee. Each sandwich was wrapped in a Japanese napkin with a flag covering the top. From the balcony of the Coates House the troops were reviewed by the ladies of the Soldiers Relief Association and the Relief Corps, who were there at the request of soldiers who benefited from their good care. Mayor Jones and the reception committee reviewed the troops as representatives of the city.
