There were only 15 cars built by Ghia in the Supersonic range and this 1956 Aston Martin DB 2/4 Mark II was the sole example built on that chassis. Designed by Giovanni Savonuzzi, the man that helped make rocket fins cool in the 50s, it was a car that made the automobile seem part of the space race. This car was ordered by an expatriate American living in Paris and debuted at the 1956 Turin Auto Salon displayed alongside a Dual-Ghia saloon. An aluminum body sheathed the enlarged DB2/4 chassis and the interior was custom fabricated to match the exteriors futuristic styling. Sold through several hands in the late 50s, it wound up as a wedding gift to a Vanderbilt heir and then passed through an additional series of well-known owners before it was parked at an abandoned Detroit gas station and forgotten until 1974. Purchased by a man in Ohio, it languished for another three decades before it was finally purchased by an Aston Martin enthusiast in 2003 and then comprehensively restored and shown on the major concours circuit. It was sold in 2013 by RM Auctions for $2.3 million. Images by Darren Schanbel/RM Auctions except for Chrysler-Ghia (by Michael Furman).
