Theres a Vietnamese man in my neighborhood who Ive seen almost daily since I moved into Jerrys condo 29 years ago... watched him wheel his baby daughter in a carriage..watched him pushing her up the hill on her bike...watched her riding her bike while he walked...most days hes by himself now as shes growing up...but weve never said one word...not even an acknowledgment with the eyes..as he turns the other way. I decided, yesterday morning, during our walk with the dogs, to stop him and introduce ourselves and to ask his name. At first he seemed shocked...but we exchanged handshakes and names and I asked about his little girl...and he gave one fact about himself and went on his way. This morning, on our walk, I saw him again and looked to his eyes for recognition...he started to turn away so I said hello to him remembering his name, which Jerry and I both said incorrectly as he spelled it for us. I asked him one question, which seemed to spring a leak and he kept talking and talking until he was all talked out this time...he was a tween when he escaped Vietnam and came to the states 40 years ago. We said our goodbyes and he left wearing a smile on his face.
