Theres a lot of talk online about the effectiveness of the ice - TopicsExpress

Theres a lot of talk online about the effectiveness of the ice bucket challenge and how the money is being spent by money hungry CEOs and board members lining their pockets with no real benefit to those suffering from the disease or any real hope of finding a cure. A good way to put it in perspective is to check out charitynavigator.org which is an independent organisation that rates all American charitable organisations on their financial accountability & transparency and youll find that ALS are not operating any differently to most of the major charities out there. The Red Cross had a reportable 2012/13 revenue of over $3.4 billion and had administration costs of $129 million making it 3.8% of their total expenditure- but within that their CEO took home a cool $500k for her part in running one of the worlds biggest organisations and the good work they do. In comparison the ALS Association took in $19.6 million, $2.9 million in admin costs and their CEO took home $297k making their admin costs % much higher at 11% - all of a sudden add in an extra 80 odd million from the ALS challenge and those admin costs drop in line with the revenue they have now received. To achieve great things any organisation needs the best people they can get to achieve the extraordinary and despite the best intentions of most people, at the end of the day being the best at something usually comes at a high cost. Not many doctors and scientists i know went through all those years of school to learn their craft to give away their knowledge for free. I know many do and generously donate their skills and time for free but theres not many out there not getting paid for their work, and they shouldnt be expected to either. Should they be getting paid what they do at the top level, probably not.....but it is what it is. Theres all sorts of ridiculous claims going around online about the whole organisation being a scam fed by the rhetoric of religious nutters against the use of stem cell research and conspiracy theorists with any number of theories that ALS was caused by the government, pesticides on soccer fields and a nerve agent used in chemical warfare and the food industry. Whatever the reason it exists is, it takes the tireless work of good people to ever having any hope of finding a cure. Wherever you choose to donate your money do it in an informed way without the taint of internet trolls and naysayers, the information is freely available for you to choose a charity that aligns with your own beliefs & convictions if you just take the time to do the research. If only $1 out of every $1000 I donate helps to ease the suffering of others or helps to find a cure then its been money well spent. Check out the stats yourself here: ALS Association - charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=3296#.U__ekmS1YeY RED CROSS - charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=3277#.U__eRWS1YeY Ive already shared this video but it is interesting to see that one of the most effective fundraising campaigns in recent times was not conceived in the offices of some wall street advertising company or by highly paid marketing gurus but by a group of friends trying to make a difference for their mate. Simply people caring for people.... https://youtube/watch?v=YOUj2v3Ly8w
