Theres a small paddock across from our towns centre where there are around 20 sheep. The same sheep have been there for years, with a few coming and going here and there, and as I drive past I often see someone walking around the paddock with a couple of sheep dogs who are always looking very excited to be with him. The sheep are in good condition, never shorn in winter and always look content when I drive past. Lyndel drove past yesterday on her way home and noticed one of the sheep cast (stuck on their side and unable to get up) which sometimes happens when theyre weak, sick, or have just lay down in a silly spot, like pointing the wrong way on a slope, and cant get themselves back up again. If left there, their rumen will fill with gasses and they will die of bloat, dehydration or starvation. Lyndel went up to the house next to the paddock to see if someone was home, planning to go and right the sheep if nobody answered the door. The sheeps carer came, and when she told him what shed noticed he went straight out there without hanging around for any niceties. Lyndel, left standing at his door and unsure what to do next, drove around to the fence where she first saw the sheep. She watched him walk over to the sheep, who was so badly cast that she was on her back with her legs pointing straight up into the air. She could see and hear everything that happened next. The man got to the sheep, dropped to his knees next to her, wibbled her big fat tummy and said with a smile, what are you doing on your back, Woolie? Why are you here on your back? What are you doing Woolie? in the kind of cutesy voice one might use in speaking to a three year old when tickling them. He then helped her up onto her feet and she wandered back to her friends, who were all watching and waiting for her a short distance away. He came over to Lyndels car and thanked her and they had a chat before parting ways, leaving Lyndel to drive home feeling on top of the world. I wanted to share this with you after the story of Beauty. Every so often, were reminded that alongside the horrors of the cruelty we see so often in the business of running a farmed animal sanctuary, there truly is some good in our world.
