Theres two lenses (at least) through which we can examine any contemporary political issue....the moral and the political. As a minister, Im mostly concerned with the moral. But Im always fascinated by the political....why folks support some things and not others. This is a great poll that shows just how important immigration issues are to the future of the Republican Party. Call George W stupid, if you want. But he understood this a decade ago, like apparently no contemporary Republican does. Many Latino voters would switch to the Republican side if Repubs. ever could find a way to support immigration reform. By the way, we made this *exact point* to Ted Cruzs immigration staff member last Wednesday. We reminded him that if Sen. Cruz would see fit to *lead* a bipartisan effort on immigration...with his own personal narrative? He would be a transformative figure... Nixon goes to China territory. But, that continues to seem unlikely. And hes certainly not alone within his party. BTW....this same dynamic is present in the LGBT community. I have found many people in that community to be naturally conservative. They would absolutely be drawn to a Republican Party that welcomes them. But, again, in our real world today, that seems unlikely. So, I come back to the political lens... Politics is the art of the possible. Its also the art of compromise. Until more Repubs see both of those truths, I dont think theyre gonna be doing much on this issue.
