Thermometer or Thermostat? A thermometer and a thermostat sound like the same thing yet they are quite different. A thermometer adjusts itself to the temperature in a particular area, thus it tells you what the temperature is. A thermometer does not stand out, it blends and changes to fit the kind of environment it is placed it. It does not affect the environment rather it is affected by the environment. A thermostat on the other hand does quite the opposite. It makes the room adjust to its temperature. If there is a thermostat is set at 25 degrees and it is placed in a room that is 35 degrees, it will affect the room and lower the room temperature to 25 degrees. Matthew 5:13-16 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Just like a thermostat the salt changes the taste of the food and the light also changes a place that is engulfed in darkness. Just as salt acts as a preservative, we are here to preserve the world. As the light, we are to bring illumination to a world that is engulfed in darkness. It is important to note that we are the light of the world and not the light in the church. Are you a thermometer or a thermostat? When you go out into the world, at the office in college or at your business does the world around you determine your temperature or do you determine their temperature? Many of us are hot Christians on Sunday, our amen is loud and our joy is evident. Come Wednesday the same week, our temperature has dropped to almost zero. Our amen is no longer audible and the joy we had on Sunday cannot be seen. Like a thermometer we have adopted to the temperature around us. Sunday has become like a drug where we go and get our shot but we cannot maintain the temperature throughout the week. How I pray that we all would be like a thermostat. That you and I would determine the temperature of wherever it is that we are placed. That we would not have to adjust our convictions and standards so that we can attract the world, but we would maintain out heat and attract the world to change. Just like the light attracts all sort of insects at night so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your father in heaven. You and I have two choices, we can either blend in with the crowd, or you can change the crowd. You are either influencing others or you are being influenced. So which is it?
