These are photos from the 1952 film, Moulin Rouge, which starred Jose Ferrer and Zsa Zsa Gabor. This film won a couple of Oscars and was nominated for several. Directed by the awesome John Huston. Even though I liked Baz Luhrmans film of the same name and got in a knock-down, drag-out with a good friend in Chicago over the merits of that film, I really liked Hustons earlier film. It showed the agony that was Lautrecs day-to-day existence and how he coped with absinthe and his art. Ferrer was spectacular. The scenes from the Moulin Rouge put us right in one of Lautrecs drawings. When the guy locks the front door and they start the Can-Can to that infectious, uplifting (especially the skirts!) music - amazing. Seeing that tiny man, sitting there, sipping absinthe after absinthe, with his sketch pad in constant use - wonderful. Truly an interesting film.
