These past 7 days I was privileged to have the opportunity to work alongside 18 amazing individuals in rural Honduras. Our efforts to assist in the creation of micro enterprise in El Canton, a community located about 2 and a half hours from our compound, were met with open minds and open hearts. It’s both beautiful and disturbing that the people, while having so little, provided us with hospitality that is unheard of in our society. Walking two hours to provide some of us with corn or making simple bean tamales that meant cutting back on some of their own limited supply of food. Tomasa, an 86 year old woman with the fighting spirit of woman half her age, had a smile that could light up the night sky when my team and I gave her two small plush toys. I write this as my grumpy neighbor drives by in a new Audi A8 with their innovative 4.0 TFSI engine. It’s unfair that people who are so loving and humble, have to struggle to provide food for themselves or walk two hours to get to the nearest medic. Sure we didn’t build a church like the other mission groups we met on our flight but we didn’t mean to. A church will not feed them when they’re hungry, or heal them when they’re sick, but the financial knowledge and skills we provided, empower them to pursue micro enterprise that will help them achieve a consistent income for a more secure future. If you read this, I just want you to know that you’re blessed beyond anything you can imagine. My UCLA GBB team is tagged because their efforts cannot go without praise. I seriously cannot have imagined a better way to spend Spring Break. #saukaite
