These past few weeks I have come across a number of persons that have shown to lack a comprehensive understanding of social issues and, most importantly, a complete disregard for a fundamental principle of humanity: the respect for the life of another. These persons have moved too fast in justifying one of Mexico’s most recent atrocities against its own people; my people: the massacre of 43 college students at the hands of government officials in Iguala. They judge the 43 missing, and I quote from direct conversations, as ‘criminals’, ‘parasitos sociales’, ‘underclass radicals with no respect for the law’, ‘desmadrosos sin propósito’, etc. Each and every single response that I have given to these persons seems to have been inadequate, because I ‘live in a country away and cannot possibly understand with clarity the events that have occurred’; because as a ‘radical student’, I have an ‘inherent bias which favors those whom [I] blindly choose to favor’; because I am another ‘aggressive, angry person looking to overthrow anything, both at home and away’. I take it that no response is stronger and carries more truth than the testimony of those who were once close to these 43 students.
