A confidential document obtained by Fox News suggests that one week before HealthCare.gov launched, Obama administration officials expressed fear that the website might be “unavailable” and become an embarrassment. Ed Henry reported that a private email sent out by CMS official Henry Chao to government colleagues and the website’s contractor were obtained by Rep. Darrell Issa. An email on September 25th references a meeting the previous day that included White House Chief Technology Officer Todd Park and CMS chief Marilyn Tavenner. Chao wrote: “When Todd Park and Marilyn [were] here yesterday one of the things Todd conveyed was this fear the WH has about hc.gov being unavailable.” He warned that Park would be back for more answers on September 30th and asked that they come up with a more comprehensive answer as to how we will ensure high availability” on the site. Chao also said in the email that officials should come up with a more palatable way to tell the public the site is not working. He even attached an image of the ObamaCare site saying the system is down. He wrote, “I am picturing in my mind all the major print and online publications taking screenshots of what is below and just ramping up the hyperbole about hc.gov not [being] functional.”
