They ambushed us. The mission was a no go. I started to hear the lead flying around us. Carrie, at my 8 oclock was hit once in the shoulder and five times in the head. 5 meters away on my right, Private Phillip, the closest thing I had to a brother, swallowed a bayonet. I attempted to turn and run but took three steps and fell flat on my ass. I couldnt believe that I was just murdered by a tree root. I could hear them closing in on me, I saw the rounds hitting targets closer and closer to me. I tried to get up and immediately was hit in my back and leg. I thought about all the mistakes I made in my life. The people I mistreated and lied to. The future I threw away. The woman who never wanted to see my face again, but ironically whos face resided in my shirt pocket. As I collapsed I clutched the pocket and wondered if she would think about me...and regretted wondering instantly. I hit the ground and looked to the beautiful sky on the summer day. The trees were moving gently. I felt a monstrous rumble from the ground and a white light flashed and completely blinded me. I felt my being fading just before I could barely make out the fungal smog towering in the distance.
