They seem planet of the ape like, or appear to be a delicately crafted doll type monkey. These precious little monkeys are indeed very real. Scientifically identified as Trachypithecus auratus the species is commonly known as the Javan lutung or Javan langur. Listed as vulnerable populations are rapidly declining primarily due to habitat loss destruction. Identified by Dr É, Geoffroy back in 1812 there are also a further five subspecies related to the Javan lutung. Over the past thirty years there has been species population reduction of some 36% thus seeing the species listed as vulnerable. Back in 2000 the Javan lutung was re-listed as [endangered]. Native to Indonesia Bali, Jawa, Kalimantan and Sumatera. Major threats associated with this rather human looking monkey is that of habitat loss and degradation due to expanding agriculture and human settlements, hunting for food and increasingly for the pet trade, fragmentation, and small isolated populations. Javan lutungs are most commonly glossy black with a brownish tinge to its legs, sides, and sideburns. The Latin word auratus in its scientific name means golden, and refers to a less common color variant. Note that the common name golden langur is used for a different species endemic to the Amazon rain forest - Brazil. Peru Etc.
