They’ll let anyone behind the wheel these days, won’t they? The University of Tokyo had 14 moths drive a small robotic car via a trackball. Driven by the scent of a female moth, the males maneuvered the robot in the intended direction with surprising agility. The researchers are trying to better understand the moth’s antennae and sensory motor system in hopes of duplicating it into a robot capable of detecting chemical leaks and spills.
