~~ Things Ive Learned This Week ~~ • One day. ONE! Thats the interval between when you buy a new computer and when they issue a software update. I replaced my iPad a week ago Sunday. That very night: SOFTWARE UPDATE! I bought a new Mac this past Sunday. Last night; SOFTWARE UPDATE! Newer toys dont necessarily result in fewer problems. It might just mean newer problems. • People who think the Rosetta program was a failure because the lander had problems are dumb, dumb, dumb. If you can put a spacecraft in orbit around a chunk of primordial debris half a billion kilometers away, drop a probe onto its surface in a (nearly) zero gravity environment, youve achieved a near-miracle. This would have been considered impossible two generations ago. • Electricity is funny stuff. Without it, you cant run a business. But with just a teensy bit too much, you can turn your business into Towering Inferno II. • Sean Hannity is the dumbest multi-millionaire of all time. • Or, to put it another way, Sean Hannity is the wealthiest imbecile of all time. • However, if you were to calculate by sheer mass, Rush Limbaugh has him beat hands down. • The older I get, the more I appreciate the genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. • Conversely, the older I get, the more I appreciate the effects LSD had on my tastes in music when I was in my teens. That is, if you want to call what we listened to on 45s music. • Its always prudent to top off the water tanks in the Javamobile whenever conditions permit. You never know when itll unexpectedly drop to 17° and the filler hose, the inlet and the backflow valve all freeze up. You cant make a decent cup of coffee with ice. (Thankfully, the space heaters worked!) • Barack Obama is the most good-natured chief executive in American history. Todays Republicans should be thankful theyre not dealing with Harry Truman. Hed have been dropping F bombs on Mitch McConnell and John Boehner in public at this point. • Suddenly, Fox News thinks John Kerry is pretty cool beans. But ten years ago, they led the charge in the Swift Boat smear. Why the change? Because as a diplomat, hes no longer the threat he was as a politician. Besides, he goes easier on Netanyahu, whom they like. The compliments theyve been heaping on him are gobsmacking. Swift boat? Whats a swift boat? • The raccoons that live under my house must be entertaining out-of-town guests. The chicken bones I put in the garbage last night were all over my rear deck this morning. My regular raccoon clan is tidier than this. • I think President Obama is about to make a lot of his critics very angry, and I couldnt be happier about it. Theres a reason why Executive Action exists, and todays GOP defines it.
