Things, you (1st year CS student, on a brighter, note 1st year ECE - TopicsExpress

Things, you (1st year CS student, on a brighter, note 1st year ECE too) must be doing this summer:- PS:- These all things which I am going to share with you, dont belong to me but people who are really successful. In fact I am not in that condition to suggest someone so here I am just acting like a medium between you and the world outside.so just let me start A.) What not to do (1.) Never, never, ever go for those paid trainings floated by companies who promise you to give some certificates. Their only motive is to be-fool you and fill their pocket. (2) Avoid social networking sites as much as possible. You can install add-on in your browser to minimize your time on social networking sites. (3.)Dont believe someone who tells you like extra curricular activity is everything. Next line will sum it up-You can represent extra curricular activity by 0 and study by 1. So it doesnt mean anything by putting one zero after another(like 00000...) unless you havent that 1, next time after having 1 if you will attach a 0 behind it, that will make it 10 times. Its time to do study and have some technical skills that really matters. you will have lot of time for this extra curricular activity B.) What to do- First I will like to tell you to visit google/edu/tools-and-solutions/guide-for-technical-development/index.html This site will not only tell you what things you should be learning if you want to have a decent job in Google but will also tell you from where you can learn all of them. Now starting all things point by point (1.)Learn Programming- Regardless of what branch you are in (even if civil or Mech.) learn to program. Its a skill that will help you immensely later if you want to get in research as well. You can start with something easier like Mat-lab, but my recommendation is C (the mother of all programming language) If you have already learned it, time to get your hand dirty with some Object oriented programming languages like C++ or python. Also take part in online programming contests which really, really matters (2.)Brush up algorithm and solve problems based on them(for those who have already learned some languages). And visit sites like careercup/ (3.)Explore the Linux operating system, and learn to use small utilities to increase productivity.Choose a favourite editor like Vim and master it. If you are interested in hacking then get your hand dirty with Kali Linux. (4.)Keep up with technical forums such as Stack-overflow (stackoverflow/ ) or Quora (quora/ ) and try to find solutions to unsolved problems. (5.)Apart of all these you can do one interesting thing- learn touch type, if you dont already touch type.It will really pay off.Download games like Typing master which will help you regarding this purpose. Where to go?- (i) coursera - Here you can join a course from world prominent uni. like Stanford, MIT etc. They have courses on topics ranging from computer science to death(yes!). The interface is friendly and you can actually can actually enjoy education not studies. You can also view edx for same purpose. (ii)codechef -Go here to have practice and programming contests. You can also view topecode, codeacademy for same purpose, but for beginners my recommendation is code-chef (iii)http:/youtube :- Here, you will find video tutorials and lectures just by searching by video name.No need to say further. (iv)nptel.ac.in :- Its a website maintain by HRD ministry of India, having video lectures covering all branches and topics by professors of IIT. (v.)stackoverflow :-Its a question-answer site. If you have a particular question about programming, go here and ask. Most probably it may be asked before.(google is also good for same purpose) (here I am not going to add what books you should be following as i dont know what programming language you are passionate about. But you can check this link https://github/vhf/free-programming-books/blob/master/free-programming-books.md for wide range of free ebooks covering most of programming languages) (6.)Learn LaTeX:- A lot of your life in college and beyond will be spent on producing reports, presentation etc and LaTex is a tool that can help you make polished documents that you can be proud of. This is a skill that will save countless hours in future and you will come of as a perfectionist where your peers may produce sloppy products. where to go:-The Not short Introduction to LaTeX, despite its name,is a great source to pick up basics LaTeX quickly. Download this ebook from ctan.org/tex-archive/info/lshort/english/lshort.pdf (7.)Do creative stuffs- Very important. This is the time you are not burdened with exams or assignments.Take some time out and build stuffs. With your hands(paint, best out of waste),with your pen(stories, a crazy blog, anything) or on your computer(Photoshop, web design etc) where to go- for web design, go w3schools/ you can also check site of Mozilla developers or webplatform webplatform.org/ for same purpose. (8.)Enjoy:- Means different things for different people.Have you watched all the movies in IMDB Top 250? Have you watched the awesome documentaries available online? Do you like to travel? Are you passionate about something?Maybe you are the socially-conscious type?Try volunteering them. This is the only vacation in the 4 years, you will have time for yourself.Try to purse a particular area you are passionate about and do something about it. (9.)Make an academic homepage:- probably by this time, you dont have much to write in your CV.It doesnt matter!!Thats not the point of this exercise. You can make it using a free services like Weebly ( weebly )or Google sites. You should do it because: (i) Its a great tool to keep track of your progress in life and academics. You can update in subsequent years as you gain more experience. (ii) when you sit for placements, you dont have to sit clueless for a day trying to recollect all the things you have done. In last (10.) Spend Time with family and Old friends:- Because you will miss spending time with family later. And will probably be completely cut off from pre-universities friendsinp subsequent years. Most of the things above can be done from the comforts of your home. I think a few of these should keep you busy the whole summer and make you a well rounded individual. This will keep you ahead in career skills than any industry internship in first summer break can. PS:-Thanks is that word which will keep me motivated to share these type of stuffs.Feel free to share this with your friends. Also if you have any query, in-box me or ask in the comment box.I will try you to reply as much as poss- possible.I have tried to cover all things, in case if something has left please make me known. Also I have tagged some people, the reason is to spread this article to whom, who really needs it.You can also do the same. Wishing you a great summer ahead. :) Courtesy:- quora #Quora #Anday
