Things you should definitely do in engineering. (Must Read!) -Travel There is a high chance that once you are into your job you will never get the free time that you had during college. Use this to gain new experiences. I would suggest 5 trips which you should definitely make when you are in college: 1. Spend one summer backpacking abroad. You will meet new people from different countries. You will learn to leave behind your inhibitions and try out things you never though was possible for you. Stay in hostels, eat street food, trust strangers, learn about other cultures. You will have a lot of stories to tell when you come back. 2. Do a few impulse solo trips. Do not plan a lot. Decide a place you want to visit. Pack your bags and just leave into the unknown on your own. Maybe some small village a few hundred miles from your home town or college. 3. A trip which will be the talking point of your group for years to come. For me it was travelling to Jog Falls, the second-highest plunge waterfall in India. I did it with my closest friends. We traveled by train, then bus, followed by a stay in some hotel in a small village before leaving for the Falls the next day in a cab. It was an unplanned trip like most of my other travels. We did not even know the route properly. But we made it. It was brilliant and whenever we talk about our college days now we remember our journey and the fun we had. 4. One crazy night somewhere. Maybe pitch a tent somewhere. Maybe just back pack and go to somewhere totally new. Maybe get so drunk that you dont even remember the details. 5. A journey re visiting your whole life till that point of time. It seems crazy but after my 2nd year in college, I did a whole journey which involved me visiting the hospital I was born, my playschool, all the schools I had studied in till then, my ancestral home, most of my relatives and friends. It was part of my plan to discover who I was and probably how I ended up being me. -Work in a start up or start something on your own Create something on your own. A side project maybe or an actual company. The cost of failure at this point is very less and you will learn your strengths and limitations. I started my own venture called NGOSphere which planned to provide technical solutions to NGOs. It failed miserably. We entered the finals of a few competitions but did not make any money. But it was an important learning experience nonetheless. It taught me dedication, the need for focus and how to use ones skills to solve a problem. -If you think you are not ready yet at least work in some start up. I spent a summer working in the field for a company called Redbus which has been acquired now. I tried my hands on everything. I did sales, marketing, operations, market research. It is the beauty of working in a start up. You have a free hand. It also teaches you humility. Imagine standing under the sun and sticking posters behind auto rickshaws. Talking to agents, hearing complaints from irate customers. It will change how you look at things. -Learn a new language Seriously do that. It will not only look good on your resume but also allow you to connect with more people. Join memrise to learn a few basic words. Then join some site like livemocha or busuu. I would recommend Livemocha as it is more of a social network where you can help others learn your language while learning something on your own with the help of the community there. I started learning Spanish on Livemocha during 3rd year but left after some time as I had to prepare for my job interviews. I regret it and plan to give another shot sometime soon. -Read a lot. Increase your knowledge. Read everything you can get your hands on. Try new novels, start reading up on world history, finance i.e anything that you fancy. You will never get so much free time again. -Volunteer somewhere Work in an orphanage or an old age home. Teach some kids who have no shot at getting an education basic maths and English. Do your bit for your community. -Connect with as many people you can Meet new people. Go to networking events in the industry you plan to join after college. Talk to your seniors. Help your juniors. You wont get an opportunity to connect with the 2000+ people staying with you at present. Make good friends who will last for a life time. -Do whatever you want to do. Do not pass out with any regrets. Propose to your crush. Stand for a College council post. Drink. Party. Night outs. Do everything you feel like. Just dont look back after 10 years and say Wish I had college. So, how many of these things have u. done.... Best of lucky!
