Thinking about the subject of talent...been watching a load of videos on youtube of some of the most amazing world class Salsa and Latin dancers, and got curious... You see its easy to assume that these people are naturally talented and dismiss. Its easy for them, theyve been doing it since the age of three... But as someone who was slated in ballet classes as a little girl for being horribly pigeon toed with terrible posture, and went through secondary school with chronic asthma, believing I would never be as good as the other girls, it amuses me now, having achieved a level of dancing in eight months that many people take years to achieve. I was musical, for sure, but childhood talent...sadly no. My recipe has been consistent hard work coupled with a burning desire to improve, which is driven by a deep-seated connection to Latin music, and an innate need to express myself using this medium. Theres no room for stories, or excuses about why I cant, or shouldnt dance anymore. Ive struggled through the why am I doing this? moments, dragged myself out of the stress and worries of my life into the studio, put my shoes on, and known IMMEDIATELY why Im doing this...as soon as I hear the music. Its not been easy. An hour a day, twice a day. Repetitive technique and footwork drills. Feeling like a lopsided octopus with arms and legs flailing everywhere, off balance and out of control. Blistered feet, sweating, intense concentration. Being prepared to be crap for ages until...one day you look in the mirror and realise youre not. That day was today. Im not someone learning to dance anymore... I AM A DANCER
