Thinking this evening (after a rather disappointing exchange with some pretty mean spirited people regarding a disturbing photo of an obviously troubled soul) how social media has the power to either lift us up, or drag us down. Its entirely our choice. We can post things which are kind and uplifting, images of beauty and inspiration - or we can post things which are judgmental and cruel, and images which are disturbing. We can comment in love and kindness, or we can rush to judgement regarding situations about which we really have no knowledge. Or worse, we can post images and comments ridiculing others for their appearance and opinions, jumping on a sort of mean spirited bandwagon simply for the sake of entertainment, or a sense of superiority. But heres the thing - not one of us is superior to anyone else. The people in these photos everyone is so quick to make fun of are our fellow human beings, who by ability/disability, education or circumstance, may be facing challenges the rest of us cant even imagine. So please, the next time you see someone post something ridiculing a total stranger, speak up. The next time you see a series of comments from angry, torch-carrying villagers, ready to go after an imaginary monster or perceived enemy, try to be the voice of reason. It may not be the popular thing to do, but its the right thing.
