Thirty Days in Proverbs 31 for Busy, Busy Mamas, Day 7: She Does Him Good 2014-07-07 04:00:59-04 We’ve looked at how valuable the virtuous woman is. We’ve seen that her husband trusts her. Today we’ll look at one of the reasons for that trust. Assignment: Pray for the Holy Spirit’s work in your heart as you begin your study today. Then read Proverbs 31:10-31. As you read, think about how the husband is being blessed by each of his wife’s activities and attitudes. How does he benefit from her industry? Note any insights you have after reading. Then open BlueLetterBible and search on Proverbs 31:12. Let’s look quickly at a couple words and then take some time to think about this verse. Use the “Interlinear” tool to look at the meaning of the word good. (Do you remember how? Hover over “Tool”, click “Interlinear”, click the Strong’s number for “him good”.) Rather than reading through the many ways the Hebrew word is used, we’re going to first look at its root word – the word in its most basic form. This will give us the essential meaning of good. To do this, look for the box labeled “Root Word (Etymology)”. Click on the Strong’s number in that box. This will open up information about the word good in its primary form. In your notebook, copy these definitions in a column on the left-hand side of the page. Now go back to the “Interlinear” page and click on the number for “and not evil”. Copy these definitions on the right hand side of your notebook page.Pray Prayerfully read back through these definitions. Which most often characterizes the way you relate to your husband — the good or the evil? (This may be painful to admit. If so, remember, this is the Holy Spirit doing His loving work in your heart.) The Proverbs 31 Woman does her husband good all the days of her life — across the span of her lifetime. Today, tomorrow, and on into the future — perhaps even after her husband’s death, should he die before she does. (Ruth, a virtuous woman we will look at in more detail later this month, shows us what this looks like.) Take some time to pray about what you have read today. How can you do your husband good today? God has given us many roles in our husbands’ lives. In what ways can you be pleasant and joyful? How can you act rightly in his life? Go back and click on the Strong’s number for “him good” with the “Interlinear” tool. This time look at the word as it is used in the verse, not just the root word. This may help you think of other ways to do your husband good. We need to remember that every husband is different. How can you do your husband good? What will he value and appreciate? And what does he need? Sometimes doing him good may even mean gently and humbly (that’s the hard part) appealing to him about sin that you see in his life. And it always can mean praying for him. Even for husbands who may not seem to value what we do, we can still pray for them, we can still do them good, we can still make their lives more pleasant and help raise their children for God’s glory. We can do this because, in God’s strength, as we fear Him and not man, we can be women of valor, claiming the victory that is ours in Christ, and boldly moving forward in the mission God has given us. For your children: Read Proverbs 31:12. Share what you have learned about doing your husband good and not evil all the days of your life. Then spend a few minutes discussing how your daughters — right now — can be doing their future husbands good (if God leads them to marry). The boys should be able to contribute to this discussion as well. Think beyond domestic skills; consider behaviors, attitudes, reading God’s Word, use of their time, etc. If you’d like, pull out the drawing materials and encourage the children to draw pictures that would illustrate what you have discussed.
