This Cover Song Monday is a bit of a cheat as neither of these original songs (yes, there are two in this one video) are very well known. I didnt even hear of them before this video, but stumbled upon this and had to share as its very much in the spirit of #CSM. Throw away all of Johnny Cashs recordings as if they never existed, leave only the Johnny Cash Show and the man would still be a legend. In fact, his career sadly overshadows the importance and influence of his TV show. Johnny brought artists from all corners and styles right into the homes of millions of people who wouldve otherwise never heard them. Which is another thing I love about cover songs. Its a 2-way street exposing us to artists new and old. So here is Johnny Cash introducing the sadly underrated Odetta, herself covering a slavery field song and another from a little known calypso artist of the 40s.
