This Day In Hockey History for March 23rd… → 1918 - Alf Skinner of the Toronto Arenas scored the first hat trick by an NHL player in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Vancouver Millionaires beat Toronto 6-4 in Game 2 of the 1918 Finals. → 1923 - Toronto Ontario - Foster Hewitt announces his first hockey game, over the Toronto Stars radio station CFCA; known as voice of hockey. → 1926 - NHL Championship: Mont Canadiens outscore Pitt Pirates, 6-4 in 2 games. → 1929 - Boston Bruins knocked the Montreal Canadiens out of the playoffs in their first ever post-season meeting. Eddie Shore had the winning goal in a 3-2 win, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Semi-Finals. → 1944 - Playing in his second career playoff game, Montreals Maurice Richard scored all five goals to lead the Canadiens to a 5-1 victory over Toronto, in Game Two of the Stanley Cup Semi-Finals. → 1952 - Chicagos Bill Mosienko set an NHL record for fastest three goals by one player (:21). Black Hawks won 7-6 against the Rangers at New York, before a crowd of just 3,254. It was Mosienkos 5th (and final) career hat trick. → 1980 - Former US Olympic star Mark Johnson scored his first two NHL goals to lead the Penguins to a 4-2 win against the Jets at Winnipeg → 1982 - Isles Mike Bossys 20th career hat trick-4 goals. → 1994 - Wayne Gretzky sets NHL record with 802 goals scored. → 1988 - Mario Lemieux scored a goal and added two assists to become the third player in NHL history (along with Wayne Gretzky and Phil Esposito) to score 150 points in a season when he led the Penguins to a 7-1 win over Washington. → 1993 - Winnipeg Jets Teemu Selanne had two goals and an assist in a 5-4 loss to Toronto, to set an NHL record for most points in a season by a rookie. He broke the old mark of 109 set by Peter Stastny with the Quebec Nordiques in 1980-81. → 1994 - Wayne Gretzky scored career goal #802, to break Gordie Howes record for all-time NHL goals. The record goal was scored against Vancouvers Kirk McLean as the Kings lost 6-3 to the Canucks. → 1999 - Colorado Avalanche acquired center Dale Hunter and a 2000 third-round draft pick from the Washington Capitals for a 1999 second-round draft pick. → 1999 - Detroit Red Wings acquired defenseman Chris Chelios from the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Anders Eriksson and first-round draft picks in 1999 and 2001. → 2000 - Joe Sakic scored a hat trick against Phoenix.
