This Day In Music December 2, 2014. Today. One of the greatest rock and rollers of all time died. So many great talents and great characters helped make rock music what it is, and most people only know the names of a few of them. Bobby Keys was one of those guys who was fine not being a household name, as long as he got to make music with his best friends. As a native of the Lubbock suburb of Slayton, TX, hed bribe his way into neighbor Buddy Hollys garage during practices. Raised by his grandfather, he convinced the old man to sign his guardianship over to Crickets drummer J.I. Allison so that Keys could go on tour with them. Keys credits drummer and vocalist for The Band, Levon Helm, for introducing him to the great blues harmonica players, and he adopted that style in his sax playing, making him highly sought-after as as a session player. He worked both credited and often uncredited on hundreds of recordings by many of the top acts of the rock era. He counted among his best friends a virtual whos who of rock musics pantheon. Perhaps the greatest was fellow Stone, Keith Richards. They share the exact same birth date, December 18, 1943. And the two were known to be nearly inseparable friends. Heres a great example of that blues harmonica influenced sax. Keys comes it at 1:30 on this recording. RIP Bobby. youtu.be/C0bxMWdOMbs
