This Day in History: British explorer Francis Drake becomes the first European to circumnavigate the globe, arriving back at Plymouth, England; 1580; the U.S. Continental Congress elects Benjamin Franklin, Silas Deane and Arthur Lee to be representatives to France negotiating a treaty between the two nations which would eventually allow the fledgling colonies to win independence from Great Britain during the Revolutionary War, 1776; this was the first day of work at the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation which would produce motorola car radios, the term a combination of motor and victrola, 1928; young Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy from Massachusetts and Vice President Richard Nixon begin the first of their series of debates on television, which rated by listeners on the radio Nixon won, but by those watching T.V.
