This Hobby Lobby mess misses the point completely. It has nothing to do with religious freedom or reproductive rights. It is entirely to do with Corporate Personhood. I have repeatedly heard pundits confuse or conflate David Green (founder and CEO) with the corporation itself. Hobby Lobbys employees are just that: employed by Hobby Lobby. They are not employed by David Green. The stores are not owned by David Green, they are owned by the Hobby Lobby corporation. The question is not whether the Green family has to provide contraception to its workers, but whether the Hobby Lobby corporation does. To treat Hobby Lobby and its CEO as the same entity is to reinforce the concept of corporations as persons. Corporations have public responsibilities, and if David Green is not capable of acting as CEO because he has a moral conflict with the public responsibility of the corporation he founded, he should step down.
