They huddled together all the time, and Rodolfo was very protective of his baby ‘sister’, so it was really hard on both of them when they were separated. I asked if they couldn’t have been left in the cage together, but the answer I received was that they would be going to different homes anyway! I had spent more time with Rodolfo because his poodle coat was in a much worse condition, but when he went off to his new home I turned more close attention to little Winnie. rescued toy poodle Although her fur was tangled and knotted, she didn’t really have any serious mats, and the first day I was able to snip them off and tidy her up. At the beginning she was very tentative and I could see the worry in her little face, but I kept telling her softly that it was alright, and after a while I could feel the tension seeping out of her, as she was no longer stiff when I picked her up. She would stand on my lap, look straight at me (which was quite disconcerting) and very slowly and deliberately, paw by paw, walk up my chest. Of course, I supported her as she climbed. When she got right up under my chin she settled herself against me and relaxed. She was quite happy in this position, and I could walk around with her like that for half an hour and she wouldn’t move. I will never forget the first time I went to place her back in her cage and she turned her head, gave me that look, and with her pearly whites gently grabbed my finger, as if to say – I know I have to go back in the cage, but I want to register my disapproval all the same. Thereafter she tried to remember each time to give me a parting nip, but sometimes she would forget and lick my hand instead. . . . toy poodle Image of the author and Winnie, provided by the author A young lady came in, loved Winnie on sight, signed up the papers and went away to choose toys and buy a suitable bed, so I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about her. When she was spayed a few days later she recovered quickly and the following afternoon was anxiously pacing at the front of her cage. She was so tiny I could lift her out with one hand, but I was careful because I didn’t know how much the cut was hurting, and I walked out with her to the tree stump where I often sat in the afternoon shade and put her on the ground. She did the necessaries, but had no desire to walk anywhere else, and put her paws up on my leg to be lifted. So of course I picked her up, and wanting to have a look at her cut, tentatively lay her on her back. To my surprise she didn’t put up the slightest objection, and lay there with all four feet up, just wiggling around a bit to get more comfortable. The cut looked clean and there were no tell-tale purple marks around her mouth, so I knew she hadn’t been licking at it. But there were a few sticky bits of fur around her tummy area from the surgery, that I wondered if she would let me trim away. Stealthily I worked my scissors out of my bag and, stroking her tummy all the while with one hand, snipped away all the sticky chunks of hair and she was none the wiser. toy poodle When I looked, she was fast asleep. Needless to say that afternoon I stayed much longer than usual because I just couldn’t bear to wake her up. I did manage to snap a photo though. Eventually a dog barking nearby roused her, she blinked a few times and I brought her up to a sitting position. She immediately walked up my chest for a chin snuggle and after a brief walk to stretch my legs, which had got cramped from sitting so long on the tree trunk, I had to take her back to her cage. The next day she was gone, but each time I look at the photo of her lying back on my lap in total abandon and trust, I have to smile.
