This Postponement Call by Elements within the Government is Destructive The recent call by Col. Sambo Dasuki for the postponement of the February 14th, 2015 Presidential and other elections is destructive, defeatist on the part of the ruling party and dangerous to the consolidation of our democracy. Every political observer will testify that the body language of the ruling party and the presidency signified what the NSA finally disseminated to Nigerians. The NSA should be reminded in clear and unambiguous language that the 2015 polls did not just sprang up on us. The reason for the February new date was to ensure effective transition and exhaustion of judicial matters that could arise after the polls. An election that failed after 4 years of planning and funding cannot be fixed in less than 3 months. The government first enlisted Pastor Bakare to raise the alarm of INEC’s failures and called for a 2 year transition government headed by the President. Could this have been a coincidence? A definite no in my view. The President treasured a tenure elongation that will enable him be in power for 6 years. The first bill he sent to the National Assembly was on this matter. Nigerians stood up and shot it down. Now apostles of tenure elongation have discovered a back door to this rubbish. Nigerians will not only say no to this latest machination but will ensure that the perpetrators and supposed beneficiaries will perpetually reside in the hall of infamy. The second call was by the “accidental” Governor of Adamawa State, James Ngilari. He hinged his call on security for the election. He was not only booed by the audience of his delivery but was thoroughly tasked by Nigerians to shut his mouth. Now the security Capo has joined the call for postponement. His apparent deliberate act of focusing on INEC’s inefficiency instead of security challenges is not lost on discerning Nigerians. Thankfully enough, Nigerians are treating his call with utmost disdain and contempt. The NSA must not allow his affable nature and reputation built over the years to be tarnished by nation wreckers who cannot survive without government patronage. It is better for him to resign than allow men with little or no integrity to rubbish him. Nigerians must understand that this is not the last call for tenure elongation. More calls will come especially from supposed prominent Nigerians and religious leaders. We must take such calls with bags of salt. They should have made such calls a few months back not now. The PDP must realize that opposition is not death sentence. It is a time to take stock, restrategize and remobilize for future challenges. They must not destroy our quest for a peaceful nation because of their inglorious appetite for power and lucre. Nigerians must keep vigil until we defeat the undemocratic elements. KJE at Large.
