This September when we offered a performance workshop as part of our series, I heard many people saying how they wished there was something more extensive in the area. At that time we had been developing a semester long course in Performance Interpreting -- and NOW we are very excited to offer it this SPRING 2015! Becki Rhyne is the instructor - one of the top performance interpreters in the area and a graduate of the week long intensive Bringing the Stage to Life program! The class will be piloted as a special topics elective course - and held in the Liberal Arts theater! SLS 299: Special Topics Performance/Platform Interpreting The key to successful performance interpreting lies in conveying the characters, relationships and atmosphere of the performance. This course will look at what interpreters do automatically in everyday interpreting situations and apply those skills to a theatre/concert interpreting setting, following the creative process from textual script/lyrics analysis and translation to the stage. This course will include: • Educate interpreters and students about the performing arts and how they might better approach the interpreting assignments that they accept while encouraging them to improve their own artistic interpreting abilities and prepare them for taking the stage • Textual analysis and translation, hands on practice with play texts/lyrics; provide everyone an opportunity to play around with language, offering linguistic choices that can impact everyday work as an interpreter; • Script Analysis: this will examine the theatrical interpretation from a theatrical standpoint – considering the script and its translation – becoming an artistic production for the audience; •ASL Translation skills: this will examine the written script from a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural standpoint – considering how the written word can be successfully translated into American Sign Language; • Concert interpreting: concert preparation, lyric translation, tools and coping skills to use when last minute changes are made to the performance; • Platform interpreting: how to interpret on stage, projecting signs for a larger audience; voicing for a Deaf presenter; effective methods for teaming a platform assignment. swic.edu/courses/ -- Search for course SLS 299 If you’re not a current student go to swic.edu/Apply/ for more information
