This Sunday, Jesus mentions that He is going to heaven to prepare a room for us in the mansions of heaven. You might be interested in the dimensions of the new city of Jerusalem the Golden given in Revelation – understanding that the dimensions are only figurative and symbolic – but nonetheless interesting. We don’t know how big heaven is since none of us have been there, but Jesus gives a picture of what it is like. Jesus says that heaven is like a large house with many rooms. Jesus doesn’t say exactly how many rooms but it must be an immense number. In the Revelation to St. John Jesus reveals that heaven is like a vast, holy, city. He describes its dimensions as over 1,400 miles wide, by 1,400 miles long, by 1,400 miles high (Revelation 21:16). A man once took these dimensions and tried to form a picture of what heaven was like. This is what he wrote: By these dimensions one side of this heavenly cube would be equal to half the distance from New York to Los Angeles. If we estimate that each story of the city is fifteen feet high, the city would have 528 stories. Thus, the total square footage of heaven would be 1,188,000,000,000 square miles. If we would divide that by the total estimated population of the world since the beginning of time (about 30,000,000,000), that would leave 198 square miles for every family!
