This Supreme Court is the most radical, activist court in at least the last 80 years. As happy as I am to see the Defense of Marriage Act struck down, the gutting of the Voting Rights Act is more disappointing. Because it has worked so well, the court decides that the law’s enforcement mechanisms are no longer needed. As Justice Ginsburg said in her dissent, this is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm. If only this court were as “empathetic” to the voting rights of the weakest in our society as they are to the speech and financial interests of corporations and millionaires.
