This afternoon, the Housemates were given the once in a lifetime opportunity to learn how to use the Poi. Poi refers to both a style of performance art and the equipment used for engaging in poi performance. As a performance art, poi involves swinging tethered weights through a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns. Poi artists may also sing or dance while swinging their poi. Poi can be made from various materials with different handles, weights and effects, such as fire. Poi originated with the Maori people of New Zealand, where it is still practiced today. This afternoon, the Housemates were walked through the intricacies of this art form and seemed to have a great time trying. Cleo was the first to master one of the more intricate moves and beamed like an excited kid who had just scored a bagful of candy. The Housemates seemed to be in their element as the lesson progressed and moved on to more complex moves. Bimp, Angelo and Beverly were the only Housemates conspicuous with their absence. Beverly whipped up a meal in the kitchen while Bimp sucked on a beer and chatted away. Angelo on the other hand chilled on the couch and enjoyed some alone time.
